Think of Inhabit as a hybrid between a software company and an environmental consultancy in one tech platform. We help you measure, reduce and report on your climate impact. And we work with you to collect your company’s climate data, set your objectives and develop your bespoke reduction strategy.
The Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol set the world’s most widely used standards for measuring and managing emissions and GHG accounting.
At Inhabit we follow GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standards, as well as their guidelines on transparency around what is and isn’t included in your Operational Carbon Footprint.
Your Operational Carbon Footprint is the carbon emitted through the everyday running of your company, buildings and assets, as well as through the creation of the products and services you offer.
How is it calculated?
We will calculate your Operational Carbon Footprint using Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol Scopes 1, 2 and parts of 3.
GHG Protocol uses three Scopes to calculate emissions. These are:
- Scope 1 - all your direct emissions from sources that you own or control
- Scope 2 - all your indirect emissions generated through utilities or services you buy, such as electricity, steam, heating and cooling.
- Scope 3 - all other indirect emissions within your company’s value chain. This includes emissions from the full range of activities needed to create your products or services.
At Inhabit we calculate your Operational Carbon Footprint using Scopes 1, 2 and selected items from Scope 3, such as emissions from business travel, employee commutes, homeworking, waste and water. We also look at expenses charged against products and services and calculate the emissions associated.
Why do you only include selected items from Scope 3?
We use this ‘close’ Scope 3 emissions calculation so you can focus on the items that are more easily quantifiable, and that you have more influence and control over.
That’s because right now our priority is helping you on the path to net zero as quickly and effectively as possible.
It also allows you to get the most value out of your transition through transparent reporting, communicating your commitments, and inspiring others to take action.
Short answer, yes. But the path to net zero is complex. To achieve net zero, we’d need to do a full GHG Protocol Scope 3 emissions evaluation when calculating your Operational Carbon Footprint. We will be adding that service to Inhabit in the future. At the moment we’re focused on a ‘close’ Scope 3 emissions analysis. That puts you on the path to net zero quickly, efficiently and seamlessly.
